You have probably heard a few things about cloth diapers. You may even have heard some the benefits but have you heard some of the facts? Do you know why you should use cloth diapers on your baby? Do you wonder if this is a fad or something you should really consider? Continue reading →

In your arms you hold this little person. You feel that you might bust from the feelings of love and protectiveness running through you. You would do anything for this person, your baby. Naturally you want to give your baby the best of everything and keep all harm away from your baby. Cloth diapering is one of the ways you can do just that.

Comfort

You have bought the softest blankets, clothes, and toys. You have made sure that none of the tags are scratchy and nothing will make your baby uncomfortable. Naturally you would want the diaper you put on your baby to be as comfortable as possible too. Cloth diapers are made of just that, cloth. Soft, stretchy cloth will be against your baby’s skin. Disposable diapers are made from paper. Scratchy, rough paper will be against your baby’s skin if you use disposables.

Health

You are trying to do everything to keep your baby safe. You have baby proofed your house, not small parts are anywhere to be found, and you are feeding your baby just what the doctor ordered. But by using disposable diapers you are exposing your baby to some of the harshest chemicals around. Disposables contain many chemicals not limited to Dioxin. Dioxin is used to bleach the paper and is considered by the EPA as one of the most toxic of cancer related chemicals. By using cloth diapers you have taken away all exposure to the dangerous chemicals found in disposables.

Environment

There is much talk today about doing our part to protect the planet. If you are like me there may not be many options open to you in recycling. I live 120 miles away from the closest center. But there is something that everyone can do, use cloth diapers. It is estimated that a disposable diaper will take between 250 and 500 years to decompose. Your children’s grandchildren will be around to see if Great Great Grandpa’s diaper did in fact decompose. It actually takes 2.3 times more water to manufacture a disposable diaper than it takes to wash a cloth diapers for the life of the child. Disposable diapers are the 3rd largest single consumer item in landfills.

Cost

In our current economic times we are all trying to find ways to save money and cut costs. Did you realize that it is estimated that by the time a child reaches two years old the average consumer will have spent $1,600 in diapers. That is $66 per month. While if you use cloth diapers you will spend between $300 (using prefolds and covers) to $1000 (using organic materials and other expensive brands). What a difference! Not only is there that savings but those used diapers can be sold to recoup some of your costs or they can be used for future children. It is hard to correctly estimate the total savings because the possibilities to save are so many.

Cloth diapers are reusable, comfortable, cost efficient, and one of the best choices that you can make for your baby. You will be keeping your baby in comfort, creating less waste for the planet, and saving money all at the same time.

How to wash cloth diapers.? This is the question everyone new to cloth diapering asks. Do you have to soak them in water? Do you have to use special soap. It can be kind of confusing and you may find a lot of contradictory advice online. It will wash routine will ultimately hinge on a few factors and your routine will eventually be your own.

Factors in washing cloth diapers

Your water. Is your water hard or soft? Does it have lot of minerals in it? This will make a difference in how much and which kind of detergent you can use on your cloth diapers.

Your washing machine.

What kind of washing machine do you have? If you have a front loader your routine for washing cloth diapers will be very different than someone who has a top loading washing machine.

The front loading washing machine uses a lot less water than a top loading machine. This is great for the environment, but makes washing cloth diapers a little more difficult. Here’s how I wash cloth diapers with a front loading machine.

Front Loader ~ this is the kind of machine I have and here is how I wash my cloth diapers.

Short cycle cold wash cold rinse. Wash cloth diapers through one cold cycle to rinse them off and get any left over feces off of them. No detergent in this cycle

hot wash/hot rinse. Wash cloth diapers on a long cycle with the stain rinse and an extra rinse cycle. Use a detergent free from dyes, perfumes and any additives.

Hot wash/hot rinse. Third cycle to make sure any detergent residue has rinsed free.

The discussion of detergents for cloth diapers is confusing at best. Make sure you get one that is free of dyes, perfumes and additives, but understand you may have to try a few different brands to find one that works well with your machine and your water.

If your detergent is leaving residue on your diapers you will know because one of two or both of these things will happen. Your diapers will start to stink or your baby will get a rash.

Best way to get rid of residue is to run your diapers through a few cycles in the washing machine with really hot water. If you see any suds at all in the water or on the machine run them through again.

I have suffered with residue problems. It’s best to avoid the problem in the first place and washing cloth diapers with this process with a front loading washing machine has virtually eliminated the problem. I did find the detergents specially made for front loading washing machines worked much better for me. You can find these detergents free of dyes and perfumes as well. Having a front loading washing machine can make things a little more complicated, but once you figure out a system that works with your diapers, your water and your machine it will be easy enough.

This is how I am washing cloth diapers in a front loading machine. It is a bit of a long process but it’s what I found that works. If you want to figure out which detergents to use and find answers for any other cloth diaper questions stop by the cloth diaper resource center.

Many people choose to use cloth diapers because of environmental reasons or because they feel it’s more comfortable for the child. Some people use cloth to be more natural or to keep chemicals away from their baby’s skin. And still others make this choice of the cost factor. With our first child I chose cloth diapers because I wanted to avoid anything toxic touching her skin and I wanted to save the planet at the same time! I started off with cloth with our second child, then switched to Seventh Generation disposables after a short time. What can I say? I was a less ‘perfect’ mommy the second time around! (I’m just kidding – diapers will never, ever determine how wonderful of a mommy you are!)

You can save a lot of money by using cloth diapers instead of disposables, but you can also spend a lot more if you’re not careful. If you’re looking for more environmentally friendly, less toxic ways to diaper without breaking the bank, here are some ways you can do it.

Go traditional. Use prefolds and diaper covers. Prefolds are the least expensive type of cloth diapers available and you can get good, quality diaper covers without spending a lot, either. Prefolds generally run between one and three dollars each and covers usually cost anywhere from seven to fifteen dollars each. This is a great way to save money when diapering! Of course you could spend even less money if you have some sewing skills -sew your own prefolds and save a few more dollars.

Buy one-size diapers. Don’t want to use prefolds? If you would prefer a diaper system that includes fitted, pocket or all-in-ones, then using one-size diapers can save you a lot of money. One-size diapers are generally designed to fit from around 8 to 12 pounds up to around 25 to 35 pounds and are meant to be used from soon after birth to right up to potty training. Basically this means you buy fewer diapers since you don’t need to keep buying the next size up.

I tried both the prefolded and the all-in-ones and I LOVED the all-in-ones! Easy, easy, easy.

Use a clothesline. A clothesline is a great thing to have around anyway if you’re going to be using cloth diapers since sunning diapers can help take out stains. But it’s also a great thing to have around to help save some money on your electric bill every month and help out the environment. Instead of tossing your diaper load into the dryer everytime, hang it on the clothesline every other wash and save yourself some money.

Buy used. There are lots of places you can buy used cloth diapers over the internet and this is a great way to save some money, especially if you want to use modern diapers like pockets or all-in-ones. Many people will buy a few diapers to try a new brand or a new style and find they don’t work for them and then sell them, so you might even be able to get some barely used diapers this way. Try to use a site that has user ratings so you can have an idea of how reliable and honest the person you are purchasing from is. Look for diapers that are in good or excellent condition so you can get lots of use out of them. Make sure to give them a thorough cleaning before using them on your little one.

This is how we stocked up on plenty of all-in-one cloth diapers. E-Bay to the rescue! We saved a ton by doing our homework and found some great prices.

Sell your used diapers. Consider selling your diapers after your baby has outgrown them or if a particular style isn’t working for you. You won’t be able to recoup all the money you spent buying them new, but you can get a good percentage back if your diapers are in barely used or excellent condition.

Read reviews. Browse through sites that house cloth diaper reviews before you purchase. This is a good way to get an idea of whether or not a certain style diaper might work for you (thus, saving you money because you’ll be less likely to buy things you don’t end up using). It also is a great way to find out which diapers are built to last. Try to find reviews from people who have been using a diaper for awhile – this will help you to know which diapers will stand up to the tons of washing you will give them. This leads to the last tip:

Keep your used diapers for future children. This is one way that families can really get a lot of bang for their buck when using cloth diapers. If you spend only a couple hundred dollars building up a cloth diaper stash for your first baby and can use most of those diapers for your second or even your third baby – that is a huge amount of savings over buying disposables for each child. Buying quality diapers that are made to last and making sure you care for your diapers the way the manufacturer recommends are two ways to keep your diaper stash usable for baby after baby.

Chlorine free disposable diapers are billed as being the safer, greener alternative for diapering your baby. However, they are still made with plastic, super-absorbent petroleum based gels, and they are still made from non-renewable resources. Now matter how you look at it, if you choose to use disposable diapers, 6,000 or more of these diapers are going to end up in a landfill very slowly rotting away for hundreds of years. It is great that there are chlorine free disposable diapers for those who simply won’t consider the advantages of cloth diapers, but there are better alternatives.

First, disposables of any kind are not great for the planet. We use washable clothing, washable dishes, even washable water bottles to help cut down on resource use and the huge landfill problem we are creating for ourselves. Throwing away 6,000 diapers and an equally massive stack of disposable diaper wipes (plus plastic bags or boxes they come in and then to contain them when they are dirty!) makes very little sense in a world where we are trying to hard to reverse climate change and pollution.

Washing cloth diapers uses about the same amount of water as an adult flushing the toilet 5 times a day, yet no one suggests we all move to using paper underwear to save water. Studies that make resource use for disposable diapers look equal to cloth diapers are often based on silly washing methods (who has their home water heater set to 190 degrees?) and they all ignore the fact that the 18 billion disposable diapers used in the US each year must be disposed of somewhere. Air-drying diapers can be done on a simple clothing rack if you want to do even more to lower your carbon footprint.

Second, chlorine free diapers and wipes will cost you about $2,200 for just two years worth. If your child is in diapers longer than the cost goes up. Cloth diapers, even really nice ones, will cost you from $200-600 for the whole two years. Best of all, if your child takes a little longer to potty train, you can usually keep using the same diapers. If you have a second child, cloth diapering becomes almost free since you can use the same diapers again. If you don’t need them, there are organizations that lend cloth diapers to low-income families that will happily take good second-hand diapers.

Finally, disposable diapers that are chlorine-free are not chemical free. If you choose to use cloth diapers, you can find them in many different fabrics so you can choose what is against your baby’s skin. Choose a stay-dry lining or go for all-natural fibers, you can even choose organic. Add an unscented, biodegradable laundry detergent and you have a simple system for keeping your baby’s bottom chemical free.

Baby diapers are most certainly big business in the United States and all other western countries. Disposable diapers are what most people use and there is a never-ending market for them. Most parents find them much more convenient than cloth diapers. You can clean up easily without having to launder the diaper.

Disposable diapers were first seen in stores in the 1940s, but they took a while to catch on. They were too expensive for most people and those who could afford them often had servants to do the baby care and laundering so they did not see the benefit. Also, the early disposable diapers were just in one size that did not always fit the baby well, so they leaked worse than cloth diapers.

In the 1950s, when disposable diapers started to be manufactured in different sizes, they became more popular with the rich. It was not until the 1970s that the price of disposable diapers (along with many other plastic-based products) dropped to the point where they became affordable for most people. People very quickly found how convenient they were and it was soon considered very old-fashioned and even unhygienic to use cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers have continued to improve every decade, becoming lighter weight, more absorbent and better fitting. Different styled diapers for boys and girls appeared, they were given cute designs, and diapers became more environmentally friendly due to customer demand. There are now several large manufacturers, all claiming to make the best disposable diaper for your baby.

In the late 1990s and 2000s there has been a swing back towards cloth diapers. This has come about for many reasons. One is the increasing interest in the environment. People are concerned at the way our garbage is increasing. They do not always think of the environmental cost of laundering cloth diapers, and the electricity, water and detergent that it uses.

Cloth diapers have changed a lot in the last 50 years. The cotton used these days is treated so that it stays much softer and is easier to wash than it ever used to be. They come in different colors now with cute patterns. Diaper pins have gotten more cute too, and many cloth nappies do not even need them, because they fasten with buttons or velcro.

Even with cloth diapers you do have a disposable section which is the liner. This means you do not have to deal with big mess on the diaper itself. Another advantage of cloth diapers is that children who wear them will usually toilet train earlier because they can feel the unpleasantness of being wet in a cloth diaper. On the other hand, a small baby in a cloth diaper is more likely to wake when it is wet for this same reason.

Cloth diapers are also less irritating to the skin for most babies, and as many babies these days develop skin problems like eczema, this can be important for parents in their choice of baby diapers.

One of your first decisions when you have children and are looking into diapers is to use diapers cloth or disposable diapers. Each type of diaper has its advantages and disadvantages. While disposable diapers are very convenient they can also be very expensive. Diapers cloth are less expensive but you will have to wash them. Both types of diapers have easy snaps or Velcro to close the diaper.

While cloth diapers have become popular again the disposable diapers till reign supreme. Mainly because disposable diapers have absorbent crystals in the diapers that can absorb huge amounts of liquids. This way the liquids will not bother your baby’s skin and cause a rash or any other form of discomfort.

Cloth diapers can be made of several different types of materials. Typically they are made of absorbent cotton such as birds-eye, terry, flannel, or gauze. Flannel is the most absorbent material and is also feels the softest against the skin. However during the hot summer month’s gauze can be a better choice, as it is very lightweight.

While all in one-cloth diapers can be more expensive they are worth the convenience. This all in one system has the diaper cloth and a protective cover. The cover is moisture resistant and is inserted into the diaper. It helps for fit, absorbency, leak control and you do not need to use a safety pin to close the diaper. Some of the more well known brands that produce all in one cloth diapers include Bum Genius, Bumkins, Fuzzi Bunz, Dundee, Gerber, Swaddlebess and Kushies.

It is possible to find and purchase cloth diapers at toy stores, online, through mail order and at baby stores. On average a cloth diaper should cost between 1 to 3 dollars and one set of waterproof pants starting at $2. 50 and up. If you decide to purchase an all in one diapering system then this will start somewhere between 7 to 12 dollars, though you can find discounts for sets of five or more.

Which type of cloth diaper you decide to use will depend on several different factors though it is mainly based on personal preference. To start out with you should have about 3 dozen on hand. You should do some searching and research online to find the best prices for the type of cloth diapers you have chosen.

Many parents also chose cloth diapers because they are chemical free and can be recycled. Most disposable diapers are garbage and will show up in landfill. Cloth diapers can be washed and reused. There are many chemicals used in disposable diapers and several toxins such as Dioxin, sodium polyacrylate and Tributy-tin. These toxins can cause cancer, has hormonal problems in humans and increase the possibility of getting toxic shock syndrome.

Practically all of the disposable diapers are thrown out every year, which is over 18 billion diapers. So using reusable diapers is of great benefit to the environment as you are making a contribution to saving the environment. Once you do not need cloth diapers anymore they can be used as rags. Unlike disposable diapers a cloth diapering system can cost as little as $300 to set up, though organic and natural diapers can be pricey. All together the cost is one tenth of that compared to disposable diapers.

The debate about whether to use cloth diapers over disposable diapers has raged for years. Those who swear by disposables claim their convenience trumps any drawbacks. Those who use cloth diapers have equally-strong opinions about their diaper choice.

My spouse and I, after having used both cloth diapers and disposables, decided to solely use the latter. But, we realized that cloth diapers offer many benefits that disposables lack. In our research, experience and through conversations with others, we learned some of the main reasons why some new parents choose to use cloth.

Reason #1: Cloth Diapers Cost Less

While estimates vary widely, many experts agree that from the moment of birth through the time when a child is becoming potty-trained, new parents can expect to spend over $2,000 on disposable diapers. With the added cost of baby formula, food and other necessities, $2,000 is a significant expense. On the other hand, an entire set of cloth diapers will likely cost under $100. Also the cloth type can be reused for any brothers and sisters who may be born later.

Reason #2: Cloth Diapers Are Better For Your Baby’s Health

Some parents claim that cloth diapers help prevent your child from developing skin rashes because the cloth lacks the chemicals that are often found in name-brand disposables. Though information is limited, some studies suggest a link between the chemicals in disposables and sterility and cancer.

Reason #3: Cloth Diapers Are Environmentally-Conscious

Disposable diapers go from our babies’ bottoms to our nation’s landfills. It’s estimated that American children use 18 billion disposables each year, adding 80 tons of plastic and 1.3 million tons of pulp wood to our landfills. Instead, cloth diapers go from our babies’ bottoms to our washing machines before landing back under our babies’ bottoms. In other words, they have little negative environmental impact.

Reason #4: Cloth Diapers Accelerate Potty-Training

Studies have shown that when children use cloth diapers, they often make the transition from diapers to potty-training more easily. There are a couple of reasons why this may be so. First, cloth diapers don’t have the ability to soak up wetness and keep your child dry like disposables. So, when your child soils the cloth type, they are more likely to feel the sensation and want to learn how to avoid it.

Second, some research has shown that many children grow attached to their cloth diapers. They began to feel a level of responsibility for them, often trying to remove them when they feel the need to eliminate. This tendency continues to grow as the child ages and eventually encourages the transition to potty-training. Though some people doubt the validity of these reasons, additional research seem to support the findings of earlier studies.

Should You Use Cloth Diapers For Your Child?

Ultimately, your decision to use cloth will depend on how important some of the factors above are for you and your family. Some new parents are extremely concerned with their contributions to the environment. Others place a higher value on convenience. Still others focus on the difference in cost between cloth and the disposable alternative. I suggest trying both. That way, you’ll know from experience which is the better choice for your child.

Whether your child is a newborn or almost ready to potty-train, chances are he'll be going through diapers like mad his first few years in your house. Getting the right diaper sizes can help you save money and prevent leaks - increasing everyone's enjoyment of the diaper wearing years! Continue reading →

Even before your baby is born, you are faced with an immense number of decisions regarding the products and services you will use to care for your baby.If you delivered your baby in a hospital, you were most likely given starter diapers. As a first time parent, you may not know which diaper brand you want to use. And, like many people, you probably assumed that the diapers you received were a good fit for your family. After all, if the hospital is giving them to you, they have to be good, right?

While no hospital will provide supplies that will be detrimental to any patient, most hospitals do not have preferred diaper suppliers.Generally, manufacturers provide supplies of diapers to hospitals as a marketing tool to get parents hooked as early as possible. It is a very effective strategy in that, if you can secure the payment of $30 a week for three years, the cost of the initial diaper supply has more than paid for itself.

But, as a parent, you need to figure out which diapers are right for your child. You have already marveled over the individual fingers and individual toes. Now, it is time to determine which diaper will cover your child’s individual tush.Part of figuring out which diaper will work is gaining an understanding how diaper sizing works.Logically, diapers are sized based on weight. The amount of diapers per package also decreases as the size of the diapers increase. This means that you will get fewer diapers per pack as your child grows.

Here’s A Simple Example Of Different Diapers Sizes

To get a better familiarity with diaper sizing, this article will explore one brand of disposable diapers and their sizing metrics.

As most babies are born under ten pounds, the standard newborn diapers will be appropriate. They are categorized for up to ten pounds. Some parents forego the newborn diapers and opt for size 1-2.This is realistic by weight, but does not take into account diaper accommodations for the umbilical cord stump.Newborn diapers are specially designed to leave room for the cord stump to heal and eventually fall off, which typically occurs a few weeks after birth.

Once your child begins to grow, you will use weight as a measuring tool to determine when you need to purchase the next size up.You may want to determine whether your child has output capacity for the next size up.For example, normally if your child reaches 16 lbs, you are ready to purchase size 3.However, if your child is slow to gain weight or is in a lower weight percentile, your child still may have the output capacity of size 3 diapers.

Disposable diapers range in size from Newborn to Size 6, which accommodates over 35 lbs.

The normal size weight ranges are:

-Up to ten pounds:newborn

-8 to 15 pounds: Size 1-2

-16 to 28 pounds:Size 3

-22 to 37 pounds:Size 4

-27 plus pounds:Size 5

-Over 35 pounds:Size 6

Once your baby has graduated from diapers, you can stick with the diaper products and switch to training pants. Also, if you like to spend time swimming or at the wading pool in the summer, you might want to pick up a package of swim pants to make sure your baby is a welcome visitor at any aquatic attractions you visit.

Currently, my son is stalled out at Huggies Diapers Size 3. Even though he moved through the other sizes fairly quickly during his first year, his weight gain has tapered off now that he’s over one, and we’ve bought box after box of Huggies diapers size 3 – it’s incredible. We’ve been sitting with the box of size 4 diapers in his bedroom for ages thinking he was “about to” to grow into them. We’ve had that box for months now.

So, keep an eye on your child’s weight and if he’s starting to have problems with leaks or over-filling the diapers, it might be time to move up in diaper size.

Everything old is new again, especially when it comes to caring for babies. Although new parents a few decades ago may have balked at the idea of using cloth diapers, today more and more of us are looking into this more natural form of diapering.

Cloth diapers have been around for most of human history, but if you haven’t seen cloth diapers these days you may be in for quite a surprise! Today’s designs are sleek, leak-proof and come in new, cute designs.

If you haven’t considered using cloth diapers, there are several reasons why you may want to make the switch. The first reason is purely economic. By the time your child is potty-trained, you will have spent at least $2,000 on disposable diapers. That is money that you are literally throwing away each and every day.

On the other hand, a good set of cloth diapers will cost you an average of $300. As your child grows, you can even sell your smaller diapers in exchange from larger ones. At the most, you can expect to spend $500 over the course of your child’s diaper using time. That’s a savings of $1500. With that amount of money, you could start a savings account for your children and have a nice addition to their college fund by the time they graduate high school.

Money savings aside, there are several other reasons why cloth diapers make good sense. Cloth diapers are environmentally friendly. When you throw out disposable diapers, you’re not only wasting money, but you are filling out landfills with waste that won’t biodegrade for many years to come. It’s estimated that disposable diapers will take 500 years to completely degrade. That means that all the disposable diapers that have ever been used in the history of the product are still out there somewhere! It’s staggering when you think about it.

By using cloth, you’re becoming part of the solution instead of part of the problem. It can take as much as 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum and 20 pounds of chlorine to produce enough diapers for one baby for just 12 months! When you make the decision to use cloth, your actions have a massive beneficial impact on the environment.

Finally, by using cloth diapers you may also be protecting your baby’s skin and health. Some disposable diapers contain dioxin, which is a harmful by-product caused by the bleaching of paper. Dioxin is a carcinogen and has been banned in other industrialized countries, but it has not been banned in the United States.

By using cloth, you’re removing the risk of exposing your baby to this chemical, and the others that are used in disposables. The fact that your baby is wearing these chemicals all day long is reason enough to look into cloth as an option.

Cloth diapers are convenient and easy to use. Although you’ll have to wash the cloth diapers, you’ll actually be using less water than it takes to produce disposable diapers. Washing diapers is an easy process and very shortly you’ll get used to the process.

And there are even new hybrid types available (such as gDiapers) which have an over layer in which you snap flushable refills. Before you make a definite decision in the disposable versus cloth diaper debate, take a bit of time to research new options that are on the market that may offer you the best of both worlds.

Diapers are as old as the evolution of modern man, since they are an essential part of every newborn’s life. They are generally made of cloth or cotton wool pads that are pre-folded with shaped contours to fit tiny bottoms. Though diapers are associated with babies in general, there are diapers for specific uses for older people and family pets.

There are a variety of diapers on the market designed for newborns, babies and toddlers. Some are designed for older babies as a first step towards toilet-training.

A baby generally needs about 10-12 diaper changes a day. There are disposable diapers as well as cloth ones. Cloth diapers are meant to sustain heavy washing and can be reused. Disposable diapers promise top quality, and a dry feeling for the baby even when the diaper is completely saturated. These are ideal for babies with working parents since time management is a major issue.

Diapers are generally expensive, but with so brands on the market, prices are competitive. Customers are offered a wide variety of choices. There are a few things to remember before choosing a diaper. The health and comfort of the child should always be considered. Fit is very important and should not be too loose or too tight.

As pointed out earlier, there are other kinds of diapers also available. There are incontinent diapers meant for adults and dog diapers for your pet dog. Dog diapers help the dog owner protect his expensive Persian rug from dog urine. However, these diapers are only meant for male dogs.

When one ponders a little on diapers, particularly on baby diapers, one cannot help but think about how this necessity has contributed so vitally to bringing peace of mind to caregivers and parents.
