As parents it’s often hard to find a Children’s Book which really makes our children think, one which opens their minds and imagination and really gets those neurons firing. There are so many children’s books on the market that really are not so great, and some are on the shelves because of the author’s stardom or the author’s connections into the publishing business. Still, as parents we know the difference, and yes, I think our kids do too.

In fact, not long ago I read a wonderful Children’s book, that was delightfully illustrated and well, it really hit home. This book was such a simple book, but it had such a powerful message and one that provokes thought, and helps our children understand our realm. The book is called;

“The Hole Story” by Ruthie Darling and illustrated by Tricia Cottengaim; ARK Publishers, Palm Desert CA, 2009. ISBN: 978-0-578-03061-6.

Without giving away the whole story here, I’d like to explain to the parents buying this awesome book that it will help your child understand and comprehend the visual and spatial world around them. The author, Ruthie Darling, really knows her stuff too. In a recent interview, I barraged her with questions about the story, and how it could make such a great impact on our kids; she never missed a beat. She definitely knows her stuff.

The author is not new to Children’s Books and has over 55 stories just waiting to be told, and one-by-one she is producing great books for all of us. This book especially hit my fancy due the simple plot and message, along with the brilliant way it makes you think. I am sure you’ll enjoy all of Ruthie’s children’s books, and I recommend that you start with this one. And I must admit, it certainly made me think.

Lance Winslow – Lance Winslow’s Bio. Lance Winslow loves great authors and enjoys doing book reviews and recommending the best children’s books of they year; http://www.ruthiedarling.com/

Note: All of Lance Winslow’s articles are written by him, not by Automated Software, any Computer Program, or Artificially Intelligent Software. None of his articles are outsourced, PLR Content or written by ghost writers. Lance Winslow believes those who use these strategies lack integrity and mislead the reader. Indeed, those who use such cheating tools, crutches, and tricks of the trade may even be breaking the law by misleading the consumer and misrepresenting themselves in online marketing, which he finds completely unacceptable.

Yeah right. I am still fat at the start of week three of my diet and frankly that doesn’t surprise me. I would surprise the idiots who tout low carb diets as a miracle plan with no real understanding of anything more than how to run their mouths.

On that note in two weeks I have gone through more that 12 dozen eggs, two hams, 5 pounds of bacon, 6 pounds of sausages, more than a dozen pounds of steak, 10 pounds of pork chops, a couple of chickens, a couple dozen deep fried chicken legs among other stuff and dropped 20 pounds. For those who want to tell me low carb diets don’t work well you can kiss my hairy but nearly as fat ass.

20 pounds gone 120 to go!

Washing cloth diapers can be a challenge, even more so when you are using a front loading washing machine. Find out how to wash cloth diapers, keep the funk out and baby fresh even with a front loading washing machine. Continue reading →

How to wash cloth diapers.? This is the question everyone new to cloth diapering asks. Do you have to soak them in water? Do you have to use special soap. It can be kind of confusing and you may find a lot of contradictory advice online. It will wash routine will ultimately hinge on a few factors and your routine will eventually be your own.

Factors in washing cloth diapers

Your water. Is your water hard or soft? Does it have lot of minerals in it? This will make a difference in how much and which kind of detergent you can use on your cloth diapers.

Your washing machine.

What kind of washing machine do you have? If you have a front loader your routine for washing cloth diapers will be very different than someone who has a top loading washing machine.

The front loading washing machine uses a lot less water than a top loading machine. This is great for the environment, but makes washing cloth diapers a little more difficult. Here’s how I wash cloth diapers with a front loading machine.

Front Loader ~ this is the kind of machine I have and here is how I wash my cloth diapers.

Short cycle cold wash cold rinse. Wash cloth diapers through one cold cycle to rinse them off and get any left over feces off of them. No detergent in this cycle

hot wash/hot rinse. Wash cloth diapers on a long cycle with the stain rinse and an extra rinse cycle. Use a detergent free from dyes, perfumes and any additives.

Hot wash/hot rinse. Third cycle to make sure any detergent residue has rinsed free.

The discussion of detergents for cloth diapers is confusing at best. Make sure you get one that is free of dyes, perfumes and additives, but understand you may have to try a few different brands to find one that works well with your machine and your water.

If your detergent is leaving residue on your diapers you will know because one of two or both of these things will happen. Your diapers will start to stink or your baby will get a rash.

Best way to get rid of residue is to run your diapers through a few cycles in the washing machine with really hot water. If you see any suds at all in the water or on the machine run them through again.

I have suffered with residue problems. It’s best to avoid the problem in the first place and washing cloth diapers with this process with a front loading washing machine has virtually eliminated the problem. I did find the detergents specially made for front loading washing machines worked much better for me. You can find these detergents free of dyes and perfumes as well. Having a front loading washing machine can make things a little more complicated, but once you figure out a system that works with your diapers, your water and your machine it will be easy enough.

This is how I am washing cloth diapers in a front loading machine. It is a bit of a long process but it’s what I found that works. If you want to figure out which detergents to use and find answers for any other cloth diaper questions stop by the cloth diaper resource center.

Whats your favorite fairy tale? Each one of us could answer this question rather easily. Fairy tales are an important part of our childhood. Our parents read them to us at bedtime allowing us to bond with them and meet our favorite heroes in dreamland as well.

Fairy tales and other similar types of stories are frequently found in books for children that are common at home or in libraries and in school. These books can really stir up the imagination of children and teach them good morals and values.

In the past, boys and girls preference for the kind of stories found in books for children differed. Boys are interested in stories about adventure like those of pirates, explorers, and pirates. Girls n the other hand are mostly to read about ponies or training as nurses.

Modern stories however cater to the interest of both sexes, and while in the past stories revolve around a group the same gender, todays stories often combine them. The trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series is a perfect example.

Most of the stories in the past also portray a pleasant world were children could wander around safely. In modern books for children however, girl characters like Hermione can get stuck in dangerous situations as much as their boy counterparts.

Nevertheless the mellow flavor of traditional stories is still part of their charm, it allows readers to be reassured by the idyllic world of classics like The Wind in the Willow.

Books for children can be quite lucrative. They can be found in our homes, day cares, and children libraries throughout the world. The characters have even been brought to life in movies. Disney made movies of the classics like, Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella, and Snow White.

JK Rowling is recognized as todays foremost wirier of books for children. She follows in the light o other writers in childrens fiction like Roald Dahl and JRR Tolkien. Her characters, Harry Potter and his friends are now world-famous and her stores have also been immortalized on the silver screen as well.

Her work is so appealing the children who had no attraction to reading are now awaiting the next potter book impatiently. Although her books have been criticized as having no place for religion and are exposing children to potentially harmful realm of magic they also teach values to children.

Courage, loyalty, and comradeship are just a few of the values hat can be learned from books for children Harry Potter.

When it comes to children’s literature, rabbits seem to be the protagonists of choice. Although others species are represented in various tales, usually in groups of three-The Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Little Pigs-rabbits constitute an entire genre, a subculture, if you will, of animal prose. There’s the durable Peter Rabbit and the hapless hare who accompanies the tortoise on the great race. Even Christopher Robin’s Hundred-Acre Wood would be incomplete without the venerable and slightly bumbling Rabbit. For the infant set, bunnies clearly rock.

Since I believe that children learn to read by being read to, I started choosing books for my grandsons while they were still in the cradle. As I browsed the bunny shelf at my local bookstore, I found three possible first books: Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny, and Pat the Bunny, in which starring roles are admirably filled by cottontails.

As I compared stories, a clear winner emerged. Goodnight Moon was a strong contender. A charming tale millions of parents have used as a bedtime ritual, the book nonetheless raises several unsettling questions. Who, exactly, is the old woman who sits in the corner of the nursery and whispers, “Hush”? Did she just walk in off the street? Didn’t the bunny parents know they should lock the door? And why is there a bowl of mush in the bedroom? To the best of my knowledge, traditional bunnies, such as those in Mr. McGregor’s garden, favor lettuce and carrots. Their mouths are not well-adapted to slurping up mush. Is the baby bunny being reared by a gang of revisionist grain-eaters? Seemed mighty subversive to me. I moved on.

The next entrant in the first-book sweepstakes, The Runaway Bunny, is another delightful classic. However, I gave it a pass because it reduced my daughter-in-law to floods of hormonally induced postpartum tears. Another choice was called for.

So it came down to Pat the Bunny. For riveting plot and dramatic tension, you can’t beat this tiny book. Peopled with fascinating characters-the bunny, the ever-intriguing Paul and Judy No-Last-Name, the man with the scratchy beard and the woman with the gold ring (OK, so they turn out to be Mummy and Daddy)-and interesting effects, such as the disappearing mirror and the book-within-a-book, this little volume has it all and ends with a simple, yet satisfying, “goodbye.” How many other authors could pull off so abrupt a finale with such grace and panache?

Although Pat the Cat, the enchanting sequel to Pat the Bunny, has its fans as well, it somehow lacks the luster of the original. The bunny makes all the difference.

Many people choose to use cloth diapers because of environmental reasons or because they feel it’s more comfortable for the child. Some people use cloth to be more natural or to keep chemicals away from their baby’s skin. And still others make this choice of the cost factor. With our first child I chose cloth diapers because I wanted to avoid anything toxic touching her skin and I wanted to save the planet at the same time! I started off with cloth with our second child, then switched to Seventh Generation disposables after a short time. What can I say? I was a less ‘perfect’ mommy the second time around! (I’m just kidding – diapers will never, ever determine how wonderful of a mommy you are!)

You can save a lot of money by using cloth diapers instead of disposables, but you can also spend a lot more if you’re not careful. If you’re looking for more environmentally friendly, less toxic ways to diaper without breaking the bank, here are some ways you can do it.

Go traditional. Use prefolds and diaper covers. Prefolds are the least expensive type of cloth diapers available and you can get good, quality diaper covers without spending a lot, either. Prefolds generally run between one and three dollars each and covers usually cost anywhere from seven to fifteen dollars each. This is a great way to save money when diapering! Of course you could spend even less money if you have some sewing skills -sew your own prefolds and save a few more dollars.

Buy one-size diapers. Don’t want to use prefolds? If you would prefer a diaper system that includes fitted, pocket or all-in-ones, then using one-size diapers can save you a lot of money. One-size diapers are generally designed to fit from around 8 to 12 pounds up to around 25 to 35 pounds and are meant to be used from soon after birth to right up to potty training. Basically this means you buy fewer diapers since you don’t need to keep buying the next size up.

I tried both the prefolded and the all-in-ones and I LOVED the all-in-ones! Easy, easy, easy.

Use a clothesline. A clothesline is a great thing to have around anyway if you’re going to be using cloth diapers since sunning diapers can help take out stains. But it’s also a great thing to have around to help save some money on your electric bill every month and help out the environment. Instead of tossing your diaper load into the dryer everytime, hang it on the clothesline every other wash and save yourself some money.

Buy used. There are lots of places you can buy used cloth diapers over the internet and this is a great way to save some money, especially if you want to use modern diapers like pockets or all-in-ones. Many people will buy a few diapers to try a new brand or a new style and find they don’t work for them and then sell them, so you might even be able to get some barely used diapers this way. Try to use a site that has user ratings so you can have an idea of how reliable and honest the person you are purchasing from is. Look for diapers that are in good or excellent condition so you can get lots of use out of them. Make sure to give them a thorough cleaning before using them on your little one.

This is how we stocked up on plenty of all-in-one cloth diapers. E-Bay to the rescue! We saved a ton by doing our homework and found some great prices.

Sell your used diapers. Consider selling your diapers after your baby has outgrown them or if a particular style isn’t working for you. You won’t be able to recoup all the money you spent buying them new, but you can get a good percentage back if your diapers are in barely used or excellent condition.

Read reviews. Browse through sites that house cloth diaper reviews before you purchase. This is a good way to get an idea of whether or not a certain style diaper might work for you (thus, saving you money because you’ll be less likely to buy things you don’t end up using). It also is a great way to find out which diapers are built to last. Try to find reviews from people who have been using a diaper for awhile – this will help you to know which diapers will stand up to the tons of washing you will give them. This leads to the last tip:

Keep your used diapers for future children. This is one way that families can really get a lot of bang for their buck when using cloth diapers. If you spend only a couple hundred dollars building up a cloth diaper stash for your first baby and can use most of those diapers for your second or even your third baby – that is a huge amount of savings over buying disposables for each child. Buying quality diapers that are made to last and making sure you care for your diapers the way the manufacturer recommends are two ways to keep your diaper stash usable for baby after baby.

The Most Beautiful Little Girl In The World

Every little girl is beautiful. As a little girl grows up, inevitably she finds another little girl prettier, smarter, healthier, wealthier, more athletic, etc.. From a distance, a little girl often thinks that a friend may seem to have it all. Feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, insecurity and even hate can then ensue. Teaching a little girl to look within her own heart, know how valuable she is to the God who created her, and to know God’s love are great resources for life. Inner beauty, that comes from a close relationship with God, transcends any label the world may give. If a little girl lets that inner beauty shine through, she willl be “The Most Beautiful Little Girl In The World”!

My name is Nancy Elizabeth Pharr, and I am a wife and mother of two children. I am a native Atlantan, and I received my BA in English Literature from Mercer University in Atlanta, GA in 1987. I always wanted to write a book, but it was not until a few years ago when my own children inspired me that I actually began writing children’s books. An important aspect of my writing and my life is that I want to inspire children to be the best that they can possibly be – I know that with God’s help, they can.

This article is the first in a series on how to choose a children's book. In Part 1 of this article I will lay out the road map for the series, and then in Part 2 I will begin discussing the notion of "subjective appeal", i.e., the considerations that might make a book appealing to a child. In particular I will argue for the importance of considering subjective appeal when choosing a book. Continue reading →

PART 1: INTRODUCTION

It goes without saying that a child’s engagement with good books is important and valuable in the child’s development. Not only can reading good books expand a child’s cognitive abilities, but it can also spur a child’s emotional, moral, and spiritual development. However, a quick visit to one of the big online or brick-and-mortar book retailers is enough to make you realize there are zillions of children’s books. Some of these books are good, but many are not. So, if you are looking to buy a book for a child, you are left with a question: “How do I choose a good children’s book?”

In this article I will present the first two parts of a multi-part article series that I hope can go some way toward answering that question in a general way, such that after reading the series (or part of it) you will be more equipped to choose a children’s book, even if you do not have access to reviews or recommendations. I have chosen to write on this topic in a series of articles since I hope to treat the topic in some depth.

The roadmap for this series is as follows. In the first section of the series I will discuss the factors that make up what I call the subjective appeal of a children’s book. In other words, I will try to explain the considerations that might make a book appealing to the key person we have in mind, namely the child that will engage with the book. Simply put, these are the reasons that the child will like the book. So, for example, in the articles on subjective appeal I will be talking about things like humor and illustration quality. Some of these considerations will be general–i.e., they will apply to all children–and some will be particular to the child you have in mind. In addition to simply listing and explaining these considerations, I will try to emphasize the importance of considering subjective appeal when choosing a children’s book. Indeed, I will take up the topic of the importance of considering subjective appeal in Part 2 of this article, following the introductory Part 1.

After discussing subjective appeal, in the second section of the series I plan to take up the factors relevant to the developmental value of a children’s book. The factors I have in mind here are those that allow a book to contribute to a child’s cognitive, emotional, moral, and even spiritual development. The assumption here is that as an adult choosing a children’s book you have some goals for your young reader that go beyond sheer delight (though this is important, as I will emphasize); presumably you will want the book to educate or spur growth in the child in some way, or at least not to detract from this process. In my lingo, books that educate or spur growth in this way have developmental value. Moreover, you might think of a book with developmental value as possessing certain qualities that you hope your child will one day fully appreciate in a book, such as beautiful language, or creativity. Given this hope, you will want to choose books that exhibit these lofty qualities–even if the child doesn’t fully appreciate them now–so that she can develop a taste for them. As a bonus, some of the considerations that make a book developmentally valuable will also make the book attractive to you as an adult, which will help you want to read it to your child!

In the third section of the series I will discuss pitfalls to avoid when choosing a children’s book, such as books that slide by on marketing alone, and books that set particularly bad examples of adult-child interaction. In the final section of the series I will point out the value of “trusted opinions” in choosing children’s books. I am thinking here of such things as “top-100″ children’s book lists and children’s book reviews, where authoritative voices weigh in and help you decide which books to choose.

PART 2: SUBJECTIVE APPEAL IS NOT OPTIONAL

With that introduction to the article series, I will begin discussing a book’s subjective appeal in more depth, and in particular I will argue for the importance of considering subjective appeal when choosing a book.

So, here is the central–and what I take to be very important–point: choosing a book with subjective appeal is not optional. Rather, it is a crucial, non-negotiable part of the selection. Now, this might go without saying for most of us: of course we aim to choose books that kids will like! However, this is not obvious to everyone. I have in mind here a certain kind of parent or caretaker that tends toward the “all business” approach to child education and development. This kind of adult might tend, at least sometimes, to read a book to a child because it is good for the child, regardless of the fact that the child would rather not be reading it.

I know that adults with this tendency are out there because I sometimes exhibit it myself! For example, my wife and I are trying to help our children learn French from a young age. Part of the way we encourage French language learning is by reading French language children’s books to them, such as a French translation of Goodnight Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown, called Bonsoir Lune. My kids enjoy this to a certain extent, but they get tired of it pretty quickly, and when they do I sometimes turn into a book nazi, forcing them to attend to a book that they are not enjoying.

However, this kind of practice–where we neglect what is enjoyable to a child–can have disastrous effects. First of all, it tends to erode the child’s desire to be read to. (My children are definitely less inclined to go back to the French language books after an episode like that.) And that fact is, of course, terrible given all the amazing relational and emotional (not to mention cognitive) benefits that derive simply from an adult sitting down and reading a book to a child.

However, as if that were not bad enough, forcing a child to bear with a book they do not like also erodes a child’s desire to read at all. In other words, such a practice may well contribute to turning the child off of reading altogether. Keeping in mind that what we want to cultivate in a child is a love of being read to, and a lifelong love of reading in general, it will be crucial to choose books that a child will enjoy reading, i.e., books with subjective appeal. After all, do you consistently read things you find boring or unappealing?

There is one final caveat to my emphasis on the importance of considering subjective appeal when choosing a children’s book: simply choosing a book that a child will like is also not enough. Why? Because sometimes children like books that are not so good for them (so do adults!). For example, my kids love the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey, which I do not think serves them well.

The implicit point here is that we, as adults, have certain developmental goals in mind for the children in our lives, so we also need to consider those goals when choosing children’s books (I will say more about what constitutes a book’s developmental value in future articles). So, given a child’s proclivity for certain forms of junky books, and given that we have certain developmental goals in mind for our children, that a book has subjective appeal for a child should not be enough to seal your choice, but it is a crucial start since it encourages a love of reading. Plus it is just plain great to see a child enjoying something!

In the next article in this series I will begin to discuss the particular factors that contribute to a book’s subjective appeal. Specifically, I will take up the topic of the themes of appealing children’s books.

Aaron Mead is currently a Ph.D. student in philosophy at UCLA, and has degrees from Stanford University (B.S., M.S.), Fuller Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and California State University, Los Angeles (M.A.). His philosophical interests include moral psychology and the development of moral character. He was fortunate to have book-savvy parents and has inherited their discriminating taste for children’s literature. Aaron runs Children’s Books and Reviews ( http://www.childrensbooksandreviews.com/ ), a website that publishes articles and reviews of children’s books, with an online bookstore full of excellent children’s literature for all ages.

Chenee runs the epitome of invincibility and confidence and I must say it was a fun read. While she feels she “always screw up all the good things” in her life she certainly has a way about blogging them. I have my doubts whether she screws them all up, we Virgos aren’t known for doing that. I of course could be biased about that last statement, which is something us Virgos are known to do.

A life can’t be too screwed up though if you list books first among your favorite things. I would recommend that she pick a few from the book listing I did earlier today. Life goes on to further be good when you list pastries among your favorite things that is unless you of course have no pastries. Ad those pastries to the movies or music she likes and it is a win!

In the end it is a quirky blog by a quirky girl!

Chlorine free disposable diapers are billed as being the safer, greener alternative for diapering your baby. However, they are still made with plastic, super-absorbent petroleum based gels, and they are still made from non-renewable resources. Now matter how you look at it, if you choose to use disposable diapers, 6,000 or more of these diapers are going to end up in a landfill very slowly rotting away for hundreds of years. It is great that there are chlorine free disposable diapers for those who simply won’t consider the advantages of cloth diapers, but there are better alternatives.

First, disposables of any kind are not great for the planet. We use washable clothing, washable dishes, even washable water bottles to help cut down on resource use and the huge landfill problem we are creating for ourselves. Throwing away 6,000 diapers and an equally massive stack of disposable diaper wipes (plus plastic bags or boxes they come in and then to contain them when they are dirty!) makes very little sense in a world where we are trying to hard to reverse climate change and pollution.

Washing cloth diapers uses about the same amount of water as an adult flushing the toilet 5 times a day, yet no one suggests we all move to using paper underwear to save water. Studies that make resource use for disposable diapers look equal to cloth diapers are often based on silly washing methods (who has their home water heater set to 190 degrees?) and they all ignore the fact that the 18 billion disposable diapers used in the US each year must be disposed of somewhere. Air-drying diapers can be done on a simple clothing rack if you want to do even more to lower your carbon footprint.

Second, chlorine free diapers and wipes will cost you about $2,200 for just two years worth. If your child is in diapers longer than the cost goes up. Cloth diapers, even really nice ones, will cost you from $200-600 for the whole two years. Best of all, if your child takes a little longer to potty train, you can usually keep using the same diapers. If you have a second child, cloth diapering becomes almost free since you can use the same diapers again. If you don’t need them, there are organizations that lend cloth diapers to low-income families that will happily take good second-hand diapers.

Finally, disposable diapers that are chlorine-free are not chemical free. If you choose to use cloth diapers, you can find them in many different fabrics so you can choose what is against your baby’s skin. Choose a stay-dry lining or go for all-natural fibers, you can even choose organic. Add an unscented, biodegradable laundry detergent and you have a simple system for keeping your baby’s bottom chemical free.
