Pagan Children’s Books

Pagan books for children are not always easy to find. A glance through the blogs on Google which deal with Pagan parenting reveals that many parents who want to bring up their children with ideals of living in harmony with nature often have to search hard to to find suitable children’s books.

Of course, it is not hard to find children’s books with magical themes. Alan Garner, C.S.Lewis and Susan Cooper novels have been enthralling generations of children. The more recent Harry Potter phenomenon testifies to the everlasting appeal of magic.

However, Pagan and Wiccan parents know that there is more to magic than waving a wand and casting spells.

The real value of Neo-Paganism lies in the appreciation of the cycles of nature and the recognition that we humans are a part of the natural world. We are not its masters or manipulators. Two thousand years of Judeo-Christianity and four hundred years of scientific materialist philosophy dominating the mainstream, has led us not to salvation by either God or Science, but to the brink of ecological catastrophe.

The ideologies which view the Earth as a mere resource to be exploited and bled dry by the leeching dominant species have directly led to the felling of the rain forests, the pollution of rivers, streams and seas and the dramatic decline in bird, animal and plant species.

And it all starts with the kids.

If you sit in church and learn that Man was given dominion over the earth and everything on it, you absorb the the attitude that you can take or destroy by God given right.

If you sit in a classroom, dissecting a dead frog or rat, and learn that the world around you and all its forms are nothing more than lumps of soulless matter and life is nothing more than a giant food chain with you at the top, why should you bother to care that that piece of blood and meat under your scalpel was once a living breathing little creature who cared about its life and its mother, brothers and sisters just as much as you.

So that it why books for children which present the Earth as our home, our motherland, our Mother are vitally important.

Those of us who write Pagan children’s books, see the Earth and her life forms as a part of a great, wondrous interconnected web; the whole created universe as a fantastic miracle – no less amazing because it renews itself each day with the rising of the sun and the passage of the moon across the sky.

Every animal, every bird, every rock, every tiny plant are important in the Neo-Pagan world view because the creation and destruction of each part of this miraculous web affects us all. A breath of wind on one part of the web shakes the whole.

Children are shaped by the philosophies of the world in which they grow up. The printed word plays a huge part in disseminating those ideologies, often through the unconscious mind.

Words have magical power. Ideas have magical power. Books have magical power. Stories have magical power.

Children have magical power.

One day those children will grow up to inherit the Earth.

The way they treat Mother Earth and her creatures will depend on the ideals which shaped their minds as they grew up. The way they treat the planet will affect every person, every animal, every living thing, every part of the web.

That is why those of us who wonder if we are insane to spend so much time struggling to write books for children, (and even more insane to try publishing them!) do put up with the financial hardship, the lack of comprehension of even people close to us and the harsh materialism of mainstream society.

Promoting the Magical world view of interconnectedness and Respect for All Life, and its weaving into the minds of our children is, perhaps. the most important thing we can do during our passage through this incredible Web of Life.

Pagan children’s books truly have magical power and life beyond the page.

Blogging for Bucks

TechAid of Technology, Gadgets, Product, reviews, Health. creates some interesting opportunities for profitable blogging.  While Google may frown on paid posting TechAid is certainly doing something right with a PR 3 blog on a free host.  If you take a look at his programs he certainly runs a risk with PPP or Pay Per Post which, I have never much liked.  I had Google drop one site that contained links top them and their little affiliate icon from a page rank of 5 to 0.  There were no posts for Pay Per Post only an affiliate link.  That is a service I can’t recommend.

He does have two other noted services which I just signed up with.  Buy Blog Reviews and A.W. Surveys both seem like good opportunities for the average blogger to turn a little more cash.  As always though when it comes to paid reviews you need to be careful and if you want to do it over the long term with any success you are going to need at minimum four blogs and preferable a dozen.  You will also need to be prepared to abandon a blog because it is still being down graded by Google.

Top Ten Tips For Expressing Breast Milk

[ad#adbrite-1]I couldn’t have put together a better list myself.

Top Ten Tips For Expressing Breast Milk
By Hannah Will

I’ve been expressing breast milk for several weeks now, so I thought I would share some important tips that have helped me greatly.

1. Be sure to drink plenty of water. It’s hard to produce milk without it, as I’ve learned. I started out expressing four to six 3oz bottles a day, but then tapered off to two or three bottles. I realized I had not been drinking much water. Increasing my water intake helped to get my milk production back up. If you decide to increase your water intake, express 15 to 30 minutes later than you normally would for a while.

2. Expressing is usually better in the morning, or after a bath or shower. You get a good let down from it. (Let down is a basically a reflex that moves your milk from the milk ducts into your nipple where your baby or breast pump can suck milk out.)

3. If expressing more than once a day, try to keep to a routine. I express two to three times a day, at 8am, 2pm and 8pm. Although it’s often recommended, I don’t express through the night, since I always have to feed through the night because my partner won’t get up to feed by bottle.

4. About 5 minutes before you’re going to express, prepare two face cloths or flannels and a bowl of hot water. Don’t make it too hot! I prefer to double express using an Ameda Lactaline dual pump. I put the hot cloths on both of my breasts for five minutes before expressing. If the cloths cool too quickly, reheat them.

5. Before expressing, remove one cloth at a time and massage that breast, rubbing softly. Pay special attention to massaging any lumps or sore areas. If you’re expressing off one breast at time, put just one cloth on the breast your planning to use first. Once you feel you are ready to express, take the cloth off that breast, reheat it and place it on the other. If you’re planning on double expressing, place hot cloths on each of your breast, wait five minutes, then massage both at the same time. Continue reading

Being Honest Often Hurts

Honesty often times is painful.  It must be excrutiating for some, look how far John McCain and Sarah Palin go out of their way to avoid it.  Often times we use the excuse that is okay to tell little white lies to save anyone from hurt feelings, but that is only an avoidance of hurting your own pride for having the feelings.  Be honest and you’ll be better for it.

Recently, I was accused of being a horrible misserable person because I admitted I am not excited about the baby.  I can live with that.  It is true, despite the fact she is due in twenty three days, I am not excited.  If she asked me a dozen years from now what I felt about her being born, I’ll be honest.  If you expect your kids to tell the truth you need to do the same with them.

What will I tell her?  I’ll tell her I wasn’t excited about having another baby.  I will tell her if she asks whether or not I thought Katy should have had an abortion immediately when she found out she was pregnant.  I will tell her not to judge me by what I thought or felt about her before she was born, but by what kind of father I have been to her.

Will my answers hurt, not if I have done my job right as her father.  I may not be the guy who coaches her soccer team.  I may not be the guy who says look what you can make of your life.  I may not be the shining example of a lot of things, but I will always be the father that did his best to take care of her and the person who never lied to her.
