5 Allergy Book Reviews

Mommy, Is This Safe to Eat? For Kids Allergic to Peanuts and Tree Nuts, 2nd Edition
By Christina Black

This is an extremely useful and enjoyable book which is aimed at children with nut allergies, though it is useful for any child with a food related allergy. This is a picture book with follows Ricky, a preschool child with a peanut allergy. By reading through and following the picture story, both parent and child can educate themselves on what foods are safe to eat and there has been no skimping on pictorial representations of safe foods and those to avoid.

A word of caution – this is sold as a “book” however, some readers are disappointed when it arrives because it is not presented in a hard cover but rather a pamphlet form. Nevertheless, it serves very well for children and it is the message which is far more important than the book presentation.

This is an excellent tool for getting the message on nut allergies over to your child and can be used again and again.

Allie the Allergic Elephant: A Children’s Story of Peanut Allergies
By Nicole Smith (Illustrated by Maggie Nichols)

Again, using the pictorial format to convey the message on food allergies to children in a format they will like and enjoy. This is one of my personal favorites as we follow the food adventures of Allie the Elephant and it is suitable for all children and not just those with an allergy. As an educative tool for children (and adults) as to how serious an allergy can be for those with them and why some foods should never be shared with or given to sufferers, this is a superlative tool for helping children understand the impact and seriousness of food allergies. It is also a great introduction for adults who can use the book to increase their own understanding of food allergies so they in turn can explain it better to children.

Food Allergies: Enjoying Life with a Severe Food Allergy
by Tanya Wright

Ms Wright has written an extremely informative book which is based upon her personal experiences and the effects upon the dietary requirements of sufferers. This is an excellent guide on how an allergy sufferer can come to terms and live with the condition given the reduced range of foods sufferers may use and the increasing number of foods which they must avoid.

The focus is upon proactive prevention with outlines of special diets and practical tips for eating away from home.

The Allergy Bible: Understanding, Diagnosing, Treating Allergies and Intolerances
By Linda Gamlin & Jonathan Brostoff

Allergies affect some 25% of the population in one form or another (with 10% of children also suffering from them). Allergic reactions from all sources are outlined and described here, together with illustrations and up-to-date information on medical developments.

While it is detailed and packed with medical information, it is also written and presented in a style which makes it highly readable and informative; an eminently suitable volume for the layperson who is interested in the subject or for those who are suffering from an allergy and need definitive information specific to their condition. This book also includes sections on alternative and complementary medicine, which have also scored some success with the treatment of allergies and alleviating symptoms.

How To Cook for Food Allergies: Understand Ingredients, Adapt Recipes with Confidence and Cook for an Exciting Allergy-Free Diet
By Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne

One major issue for those suffering from food allergies is the restricted range of foods which they cannot tolerate in their diet. It is not simply the natural food which may be the sole cause of allergic reactions, but any by-products or other foods which use them in their own production. Clearly, peanut allergy is a serious issue in this respect because it is so widely used to make other foods, including cooking foods with peanut oil.

The layout of this volume is recipe driven, with clear instructions on how to prepare a meal and the ingredients to be used as well as tips on how to source them. There is also an excellent dietary section on satisfying the sufferers vitamin and nutrition requirements.

The Picture Book Doctor De Soto, Steig’s Masterpiece

Steig has a special ability to create picture books which speak to children. The Book story is of a mouse dentist who takes care of all the animals except those that would harm mice such as cats, and fox. Then one day a fox shows up and cries to be let in, De Soto takes pity on the fox and begins to treat him. However over the course of the treatment the fox makes plans to eat Doctor De Soto, realizing what is happening De Soto too makes plans.

The picture book is done in Steig’s thick ink line and watercolor style which seems to relate well to children. As the book opens the precariousness of De Soto’s job is shown as he enters the mouth of many animals to fix their teeth, though all of these are harmless animals from cows to pigs.

De Soto is given power in his ability to choose patients both through the text and the upwards angle on him. This is important for it shows his power over the fox who shows up asking for treatment, the as we look down on the sad little fox and the street below. It is not long however before the fox takes power and the angle becomes even with him as he breaks down crying. This is when De Soto lets him in.

Once in the fox becomes the dominant figure in the illustrations, although he pleads with the mice one can see that he indeed is dominant over them, he merely needs to choose to be.

And so it is as the De Soto’s treat the fox, they are tiny to his huge mouth, as he wears the drool bib dentists put on patients, which on the fox looks disturbingly like a bib for eating.

De Soto pulls the foxes bad tooth and tells him to return to get the new one in place, on the way home the fox thinks about eating the De Soto’s. The warped perspective of this picture pushes the fox farther away from the viewer mentally, taking our sympathy away from this character.

It is then that we truly enter the De Soto’s world for we see them making the foxes tooth as he plots to eat them, they are close in a very domestic scene. Talking and laying in bed worried about the fox, then however they have an idea.

Once they have put the foxes new tooth in the fox is seen to be looking down on them as he licks his lips. However the De Soto explains that he has a new treatment to help the fox, the power in this picture shifts yet again for with a slight change of perspective and angle the fox is looking up at Doctor De Soto. The difference is slight but it is important because it keeps the back and forth of power shifts going, something that makes this picture book interesting and exceptional in its visual story telling ability.

The end of the book ends with the De Soto’s in power as the fox walks down the stair, although he is much larger in this picture he is headed for the door to leave, and the De Soto’s are well above him on the stairs.

The Fancy Nancy Book Collection – Excellent Reading Books For Children

For those of you who have a little daughter and you are looking for a selection of books which will keep her amused and interested for a long time, you may perhaps like to look at purchasing the Fancy Nancy books.

Why Little Girls Will Adore Fancy Nancy

Nancy is the main figure throughout a range of story books which were written by author Jane O’Connor. She turns out to be girl who seems to loves pretty and classy stuff. This includes clothes, hats, shoes, boots as well as lovely foodstuff such as cakes and also ice cream. She’s a big fan of French terms due to the fact that she thinks that it is probably the most exquisite language on the globe. She uses the term Bonjour to say hello to people she is introduced to since it makes her feel so fancy.

Jane O’Connor has written lots of literature about this central figure and her family. Each book is a story in itself with one single adventure. Each and every story features delightfully created pictures by a very talented illustrator. This may be a fantastic thing for parents to read with their small child mainly because you can read aloud then get your little one to explain the things they see within each picture.

Every story will see that little Nancy is involved with some type of outing or perhaps adventure. She often ensures that she’s properly dressed and always looks splendid. Occasionally she will get herself into some problems and this is what the majority of the stories tend to be about. Even so when you get to the end of each tale, any troubles which have come to light through the story normally get solved and you can be sure of a very pleasant ending.

The very first book within the series is simply called Fancy Nancy and the remainder of books have titles that begin with her name and identify the adventure that will happen.

After you get your daughter interested in all these books, you may decide to purchase one of the many Fancy Nancy dolls that are available for an excellent gift idea. Take a look online and you will find a great choice for a great price.

My Uterus Is Not A Circus Ring

149580816_a956e46245But it certainly feels like one right about now.

For a while there I was a bit worried about not feeling much movement from Sarah. I shouldn’t have been. She’s currently performing acrobatic feats and generally making me uncomfortable. I don’t remember Liam ever being this active until much later on. I guess it goes to show how different each pregnancy can be. I just wonder if I can survive the next 18 weeks while still staying sane. I did it once before……

Children’s Book Review – Fire Trucks to the Rescue!

Every little boy wants to grow up and become a fire fighter, interestingly enough, this is so common that children’s book marketers work very hard to produce fire engine and fire fighter books. These books sell almost as well as the little toy fire engines at the stores. If you have little boys then you know this, and therefore you want to fuel their fire and desire early on to dream and think about their future. So, why not buy a children’s book that will do just that?

What if I told you that I have just the perfect book for you in mind. In fact, I have this book sitting right in front of me and I cannot believe how well it was received. As a parent you know what I mean, sometimes they like books sometimes they don’t; luckily, this one they did. The name of the book is:

“Fire Engines to the Rescue” A Little Golden Book from the little golden book series, by Janet Campbell and illustrated by Courtney Studios, with appreciation to the Joplin Missouri Fire Department. Published by Western Publishing Company, Inc. 1991. ISBN: 0-307-00306-X.

The story takes you through a normal day in the life of a fire department and then all of a sudden a huge fire breaks out. The fire fighters rush to the scene of a multi-story structure fire and start rescuing people, including a family on one of the upper stories. They save the day and then return to the station for dinner, waiting for the next call that could happen at any time.
