Disposable Vs Cloth Diapers – Finding the Diaper Solution That's Right For You

Everything old is new again, especially when it comes to caring for babies. Although new parents a few decades ago may have balked at the idea of using cloth diapers, today more and more of us are looking into this more natural form of diapering.

Cloth diapers have been around for most of human history, but if you haven’t seen cloth diapers these days you may be in for quite a surprise! Today’s designs are sleek, leak-proof and come in new, cute designs.

If you haven’t considered using cloth diapers, there are several reasons why you may want to make the switch. The first reason is purely economic. By the time your child is potty-trained, you will have spent at least $2,000 on disposable diapers. That is money that you are literally throwing away each and every day.

On the other hand, a good set of cloth diapers will cost you an average of $300. As your child grows, you can even sell your smaller diapers in exchange from larger ones. At the most, you can expect to spend $500 over the course of your child’s diaper using time. That’s a savings of $1500. With that amount of money, you could start a savings account for your children and have a nice addition to their college fund by the time they graduate high school.

Money savings aside, there are several other reasons why cloth diapers make good sense. Cloth diapers are environmentally friendly. When you throw out disposable diapers, you’re not only wasting money, but you are filling out landfills with waste that won’t biodegrade for many years to come. It’s estimated that disposable diapers will take 500 years to completely degrade. That means that all the disposable diapers that have ever been used in the history of the product are still out there somewhere! It’s staggering when you think about it.

By using cloth, you’re becoming part of the solution instead of part of the problem. It can take as much as 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum and 20 pounds of chlorine to produce enough diapers for one baby for just 12 months! When you make the decision to use cloth, your actions have a massive beneficial impact on the environment.

Finally, by using cloth diapers you may also be protecting your baby’s skin and health. Some disposable diapers contain dioxin, which is a harmful by-product caused by the bleaching of paper. Dioxin is a carcinogen and has been banned in other industrialized countries, but it has not been banned in the United States.

By using cloth, you’re removing the risk of exposing your baby to this chemical, and the others that are used in disposables. The fact that your baby is wearing these chemicals all day long is reason enough to look into cloth as an option.

Cloth diapers are convenient and easy to use. Although you’ll have to wash the cloth diapers, you’ll actually be using less water than it takes to produce disposable diapers. Washing diapers is an easy process and very shortly you’ll get used to the process.

And there are even new hybrid types available (such as gDiapers) which have an over layer in which you snap flushable refills. Before you make a definite decision in the disposable versus cloth diaper debate, take a bit of time to research new options that are on the market that may offer you the best of both worlds.

Diapers

Diapers are as old as the evolution of modern man, since they are an essential part of every newborn’s life. They are generally made of cloth or cotton wool pads that are pre-folded with shaped contours to fit tiny bottoms. Though diapers are associated with babies in general, there are diapers for specific uses for older people and family pets.

There are a variety of diapers on the market designed for newborns, babies and toddlers. Some are designed for older babies as a first step towards toilet-training.

A baby generally needs about 10-12 diaper changes a day. There are disposable diapers as well as cloth ones. Cloth diapers are meant to sustain heavy washing and can be reused. Disposable diapers promise top quality, and a dry feeling for the baby even when the diaper is completely saturated. These are ideal for babies with working parents since time management is a major issue.

Diapers are generally expensive, but with so brands on the market, prices are competitive. Customers are offered a wide variety of choices. There are a few things to remember before choosing a diaper. The health and comfort of the child should always be considered. Fit is very important and should not be too loose or too tight.

As pointed out earlier, there are other kinds of diapers also available. There are incontinent diapers meant for adults and dog diapers for your pet dog. Dog diapers help the dog owner protect his expensive Persian rug from dog urine. However, these diapers are only meant for male dogs.

When one ponders a little on diapers, particularly on baby diapers, one cannot help but think about how this necessity has contributed so vitally to bringing peace of mind to caregivers and parents.

Diapers provides detailed information about diapers, cloth diapers, diaper bags, and more. Diapers is affiliated with Breast Pumps For Sale.

Grinelda the Mad Hatter Review

I’m going to have to be honest before starting this book review. It is a bit biased. Grinelda the Mad Hatter was illustrated by my mom, Paula Nathan. At the same time it is a tremendous book that delves into the life of an amazing little girl named Grinelda.

Grinelda does not act like other girls her age. While the other girls like to play with conscience and would talk amongst themselves Grinelda would sit by herself and wear hats.

Actually just wearing hats would be an understatement, because Grinelda did not only wear hats, she also makes them. So while the other kids would pretend to be princesses who should get whatever they wanted, Grinelda instead dreamed of new hats to make and to wear.

Grinelda had the courage to be herself and see that she did not have to be a princess like all the other girls, but could be a hat maker if she chose. She learned the value of being an individual at an early age. It is a lesson that many could benefit from in today’s cookie cutter society.

While this is a story for children it could also be for adults. All of us needs to embrace who we are and this book shows how extraordinary dreams can lead to extraordinary lives. For all the children who are laughed at in the playground, for all the children who were bullied after school, and for all those teenagers who felt they were not like their friends this book is for them. There is a mad Hatter in all of us waiting to get out.

Raise a Reader With Children’s Audio Books

We all know how short children’s attention span is. If teeners can appreciate 30-second flashy MTV images, can you imagine how fast should any images or sounds go when it comes to children, if only to hold their attention? Children’s audio books have resolved that good.

If you’re a concerned parent, you should be thankful there are portable devices. You might think they are distractions from your children’s daily school work. Not anymore because they can be used as a reinforcement tool for learning. How? Downloadable children’s audio books are now available.

There are major benefits children’s audio books can bring both on the parent and the child.

For Parents

You can participate in your child’s learning by listening along with him. You can even help him come up with his own children’s audio book, as a short reading enhancement exercise.

It’s easier for you to raise an independent reader if at an early age you immerse your child to children’s audio books. This also motivates self-reliance in your child. Soon you’ll find him choosing his own titles for listening.

Long hours of TV viewing are always a problem in child parenting. This can be cut into half when your child discovers how fun it is to listen to children’s audio books.

Children’s audio books are also a good companion for your child during a long plane ride or miles of driving. This way you won’t be hearing complaints from your little junior. He is engrossed, listening to Harry Potter as he casts spells.

For Children

A reading child is stronger and wiser. Your child may not be reading but he sure is doing a lot more than that. He is imagining as he tries to make sense of all the words he hears on audio.

A child can also have more advanced reading comprehension skills. Formative years are significant years to develop the necessary skills for a lifetime of learning. Hence, start introducing your child to children’s audio books now.

Listening is often the most abused skill. Parents and children alike take it as hearing. With children’s audio books, any child is exposed to attentive listening as he listens on his earphones for hours, with all surrounding noises drowned out.

Children’s audio books are not that hard to find. If you happen to be looking for one, you can check here for great choices: http://www.talking-book-store.com/list.aspx?catId=101

There may be other titles you want to find in audio books, you can check this site for a great collection: http://www.talking-book-store.com

Great Fairy Series Books For Girls

Little girls love fairies and if you are looking for a way to encourage their interest in reading and writing then offering a selection of books based around fairy themes is a wonderful start.

There are a number of versions of the fairy theme available in books, from the modern Tinkerbell based Disney Fairies theme to the more traditional Cicely Mary Barker Flower Fairy books. All books can be enjoyed either by older readers reading alone or through parent reading time and are a wonderful window to both a girl’s imagination, love of the earth and their interest in reading.

Tinkerbell was once a simple side-kick to Peter Pan, the hero of James Barrie’s immortal 1904 play and 1911 book. When Disney released the animated film Peter Pan in 1953 he would have no idea that one day Tinkerbell would be in a movie all her own that spawned sequels and numerous books, toys and ornaments. The Disney Fairies line took flight with the release of the Tinkerbell direct to DVD movie in 2008, the first of five planned Disney Fairies films.

There are a number of books based around Tinkerbell, Vidia, Lilly, Rani and the rest of the fairies. The first and most famous was Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Carson Levine. The book and its sequel Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand have sold millions of copies and are recommended for older, more confident readers.

Random House began releasing a series of smaller chapter books under the banner of Tales of Pixie Hollow. These books are smaller and easier to read though still recommended for competent readers. Comic company Papercutz is also releasing comic interpretations of the Disney Fairies, in the same vein as their Geronimo Stilton comics.

If you are looking for similar more contemporary interpretations of Fairy culture then try the Rainbow Magic series of books by Daisy Meadows, the Fairy Realm series by Emily Rodda, Nina Fairy Ballerina by Nicola Slater or the Emily Windsnap series of Mermaid books by Liz Kessler.

Moving away from modern interpretations of the fairy and back to a more traditional approach, the Flower Fairy series is based on Cicely Mary Barker’s original Flower Fairy illustrations, stories and rhymes first published in the early 1920′s. Cicely Mary Barker was heavily influenced by Kate Greenaway and her images are of beautiful children-like fairies in natural settings.

The publishers have hired contemporary authors to reinterpret the tales of various flower fairies and while the images and stories are a little more old-worldy than the more recent interpretations by Disney and Co. they offer an earthy balance. The stories all deal with events that happen entirely within the flower fairy world, which is a very earthy, nature-based setting.

Readers learn about the seasons and the plants that favour particular growing circumstances and how specific changes in the environment effects other aspects of that ecosystem. But it is all very subtle and totally within the natural context of the story.

If you prefer the more traditional approach, also try the Fairy Chronicles series by J.H. Sweet. Fairy stories appeal to young girls not only because they are pretty and dance and sing but also because of an inbuilt female connection with the earth. By nurturing a young girls’ love of fairies you can not only help them connect to the earth but also enhance their love of reading and writing.

Tips From A Stay At Home Dad

Sarah is now a little more than a month old and it is time for me to do a little analysis of the pros and cons of gift giving.  As a stay at home dad let me point out that I am all about practicality and functionality over what is cute.  Without further ado here is my short list

  • A good bath towel is preferable to a receiving blanket. Unless the person giving the receiving blanket has made them, which isn’t hard with a sewing machine and $2.00/yard material, a bath towel is infinitely cheaper, more durable, warmer, and has long lasting practicality.  I’ll make my case for this in a separate post, but here is the quick price comparison from Wal-Mart package of 4 20″x30″ thin yet cutesy receiving blankets, $12.00.  Terry cloth bath towels in the 24″x48″ size range can regularly be had for $2.00 to $3.00 each on sale.
  • Stay at home parents should consider cloth diapers.  I’ll make my case for using them in another post too, but the financial end of it is easy.  Wal-mart’s price for a dozen name brand pre-fold cloth diapers is $11.49 and a package of six rubber pants is $3.00.  The generic newborn diapers at walmart are $12.00 for 56 and considerably more for the name brand ones.  The average baby is going to go through eight to twelve disposables a day depending on the baby, but for coparative purposes we’ll lowgball it at eight.  That equals $12.00 give or take a week in diapers.  Call it $50.00 a month for the first three months and theprice goes up from there sharply.  I recommend four packages of cloth diapers, two packages of diaper pins, and two packages of rubber pants, call it $60.00 after taxes.
  • Don’t skimp on buying baby wipes, go directly for the large refill box of generics.  Wal-mart has their generic brand in packages of six (6) – eighty count packages for less than $8.00.  At nearly $4.00 each for an 80 count package in a semi hard plastic box, the price difference here is easy to figure out.  Though some people are going to gasp at this notion, most baby wipes can be washed, dried and reused at least once.  I discovered this by accident, but once I did I realized they are still much stronger than paper towels and good enough for some tough jobs like cleaning the surface of my flattop stove, inside the microwave, coffee spills, and any other job where liquid is involved.  My guess is they would be great for car detailing work too.
  • Bottles are a pain to clean and sterilize unless you can keep on top of it.  Buy lots of small ones, a good bottle brush with a nipple cleaner, a 1 gallon batter bowl, and an electric kettle.  Since I have to hand wash my dishes to get them clean, I prefer to do a large lot of bottles at once, and do them separately from all the other dishes, or at least first.  If you have hard water this is about the only way to ensure they actually get clean and don’t end up with that scumy film the dishwasher leaves on plastics.  Once you get them clean sterilize them in boiling water. bottles, nipples, rings, and even their pacifiers.  I find the best and safest way to get boiling water fast is a cordless electric kettle.  It takes three or four minutes to get six or seven cups boiling which about fills the one gaqllon batter bowl I use to sterilize bottles in.  With a spout and handle you can easily pour the water water out later rather than fishing through a container of really hot water if you need something immediately.
  • Don’t buy expensive baby detergent until you have used your normal stuff.  Telling parents they need special baby detergents for all of babies things is nothing more than an act of commercial terrorism playout out against parental paranoia.  Simply put advertisers know the mommy brigade will buy anything if you can convince them not doing so is not only the worst possible thing they canh do for their child, but makes you a bad parent if you don’t buy their product.  Some babies will have real skin issues and specialty soaps should be considered for them.  These conditions are very rare.  If clothes washed in your normal detergent irritate your babies skin simply add between a quarter and a half cup of borax powder to the wash cycle.  This usually solves the problem, which was caused by the detergent not fully rinsing away.
  • Sleep and coffee are your friends.  Catch a nap whenever you can.  Television isn’t that important and frankly in this day and age can be watched after the fact very easily.  If the baby is asleep at eight o’clock make the most of it rather than staying up to catch Bones, House, or your latest favorite reality show.  You can download those shows later if you didn’t DVR them.  Drink as much coffee as it takes to be wide awake and properly alert.  Light roasted coffee, such as those designated breakfast blends, have the most caffiene for they cup.  A French Press coffee pot is an excellent gift for any parent to be.
  • Don’t buy an expensive baby sling.  I can only do so many things at once and many of them require both of my hands.  If your baby is the type that demands to be held regularly this can hamper the other things you want or need to do. I blog for a living and sometimes making a deadline for a paid post has to be done no matter what Sarah wants from me.  I am not a person who can type one handed, so at first I improvised a baby sling out of a king size bed sheet which worked well enough to hold her in place next to me while I did other things.  This was hell on my neck, so I had to redesign it.  I will make a full post on this later, but you can easily make one the right size out of three to four yards of cheap material.  I paid $1.00/yard for mine as opposed to $25.00 for a fancy sling.

As I said before there are some things that just can’t be put off when you have a baby in your care and in a few minutes I expect Sarah is going to wake up and I will have to take care of them.  I have more tips and articles forthcoming.  Stay tuned.
